Hot summer jazz, funk and blues




Celebrating the Hollywood Bowl’s 100th season, Tribute to Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra will kick Summer 2022 Jazz, Funk and Blues at the Hollywood Bowl and the Ford into high gear on Wednesday July 27. Two iconic singers are celebrated by an all-star lineup featuring Billie Eilish, Debbie Harry, Dianne Reeves, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Seth MacFarlane, Bettye LaVette, and Gretchen Parlato, with Christian McBride serving as musical director.


Frank Sinatra’s Hollywood Bowl debut on August 14, 1943, was the first appearance by a pop singer with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the controversial concert set a template for eclectic pop, classical and jazz collaborations that continue today. In 1953, Peggy Lee made her Hollywood Bowl debut and a year later she appeared in the Colgate Comedy Hour, one of the first television programs shot at the Bowl.


Friday July 29, The Ford will feature Les Claypool’s Bastard Jazz. Claypool brings his Bastard Jazz project to The Ford for a night of wild and wigged-out improvisations Primus bassist, Les Claypool rarely approaches anything in a straightforward way, so it’s no surprise that his take on jazz would be especially unusual. Enlisting the he help of funk virtuoso drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic, as well as longtime collaborators Mike Dillon and Skerik this promises to be an unforgettable night of jazz music.


August and September and October will showcase an eclectic and exciting array of artists including celebrated icons and rising stars. The Ford schedule includes: Kamasi Washington (August 5);Terence Blanchard featuring The E-Collective & Turtle Island Quartet (August 9); Nubya Garcia and Nate Smith (September 1); ATMA (September 17); Luciana Souza and Vince Mendoza: Storytellers with big band (October 21)
