Romance, passion, love, art, imagine reading the most beautiful love letters full of poetry, humor, and passion. Now picture them sung on our stage by two of the most talented performers of our time, with a ravishing orchestra behind them.
Renée Fleming and Rod Gilfry return to LA Opera for this touching song cycle by Kevin Puts, which chronicles the romance of iconic artist Georgia O’Keeffe and her mentor-turned-husband Alfred Stieglitz. Theirs was a love affair for the ages. O’Keeffe living in her beloved New Mexico desert and Stieglitz in NYC. From 1915 until 1946, some 25,000 pieces of paper were exchanged between two major 20th-century artists. Painter Georgia O'Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz wrote each other letters — sometimes two and three a day, some of them 40 pages long. The correspondence tracks their relationship from acquaintances to admirers to lovers to man and wife to exasperated, but still together.
New Zealand-born conductor Gemma New makes her LAO debut leading the LA Opera Orchestra. The evening will come to a dazzling conclusion with a selection of beloved songs and duets from Broadway's Golden Age, conducted by Grant Gershon, along with additional musical delights and surprises.
