Step into the back room of Mrs. Krisnan’s convenience store and be ready for a good time, don’t be shy, and join in the fun! Mrs. Krisnan’s Party is not your typical evening out at the theater, this is a party with colorful paper decorating the back room, food simmers on the stove and strangers celebrate a joyous life experience together.
The story is fun loving, and at times bittersweet. Mrs. Krishnan’s husband was shot during a robbery of their convenience store during a robbery over 20 years ago and she’s been running it on her own, as a single mother ever since. Her children are grown and she is now thinking about selling the store.
Enter her boarder, wanna be disk jockey and party boy James who decides to throw a party for the Oman Harvest Festival. The party is a complete surprise to Mrs. Krisnan who at first rejects the idea but eventually gets into the spirit cooking Dahl, and rice for the celebration with a little help from guests.
During the evening the two actors juggle and amazing amount of things, from actually cooking, burning incense, dancing, blowing up balloons, passing out party favors, and interacting with the guests. Justin Rogers (James) dressed as King Mahabali, and Kalyani Nagarajan do an outstanding job of juggling an amazing amount of activities, actually cooking, burning incense, dancing, blowing up balloons, passing out party favors, and interacting with the guests. The actors have to be “on” every minute of the show as different audience participation could bring a new vibe with each performance.
Mrs. Krishnan’s Party at the wonderfully intimate Edye at the BroadStage until July 24.
